27 Mar.,2025

Heat treatment is applied to tempered glass to smooth out defects and enhance quality. This rigorous process improves glass strength and durability. Learn more about the homogenizing treatment process that takes place before tempered glass becomes your go-to choice for all applications!

Tempered glass is becoming the go-to choice for most applications. However, the quality and strength of tempered glass can vary depending on the heat treatment it undergoes. The homogenizing treatment process is the secret behind the improved quality and strength of tempered glass.

What is tempered glass homogenization treatment?

‌Homogenization treatment of tempered glass‌, also known as hot dip treatment, is a method of treating tempered glass through specific process conditions, aiming to reduce the self-explosion rate of tempered glass. The main purpose of homogenization treatment is to promote the completion of crystal phase transformation of nickel sulfide crystals in tempered glass, thereby reducing the self-explosion phenomenon caused by the transformation of nickel sulfide crystals‌

What are the Processes of Tempered Glass Homogenization Treatment?

The process of tempered glass homogenization treatment includes three stages: heating, Temperature-Holding and cooling:

--1. Heating stage‌:

Heating starts from the ambient temperature and stops when all glass reaches 280℃. The glass surface temperature is not allowed to exceed 320℃. Try to shorten the time when the glass surface exceeds 300℃.

--2. Temperature-Holding Stage‌:

All glass should be kept for at least two hours after reaching 290℃±10℃.

--3. Cooling stage‌:

After the temperature-holding stage is completed, the cooling stage is entered to allow the glass to drop to room temperature. When the temperature in the furnace drops to 70°C, the furnace door can be opened to terminate the cooling output.

The Purposes and Effects of Tempered Glass Homogenization Treatment

‌The main purpose of tempered glass homogenization treatment is to uniformly distribute the stress inside the tempered glass through high-temperature heating, Temperature-Holding, cooling and other processes, thereby improving the strength and temperature resistance of the tempered glass and ensuring its safety and reliability

Specifically, Temperature glass homogenization treatment can achieve the following effects:

-‌-1. Improve safety‌:

Through homogenization treatment, the internal stress of tempered glass is evenly distributed, which can significantly reduce the self-explosion rate and reduce safety hazards such as cracks and fractures caused by uneven internal stress‌

--2. Improve reliability‌:

The homogenized tempered glass has higher strength, better heat resistance, can withstand higher pressure and temperature, and is suitable for a wider range of fields.

-‌-3. Optimize optical properties‌:

Homogenization treatment can improve the optical properties of tempered glass, such as reducing optical distortion and improving transparency, making the line of sight clearer and improving the visual effect and aesthetics of the tempered glass‌.

-‌-4. Improve physical and chemical stability‌:

Homogenization treatment can improve the chemical corrosion resistance and weather resistance of the tempered glass, extend the service life of the tempered glass, and enable it to maintain good performance in various harsh environments‌.

Why tempered glass needs to be homogenized

‌The main reasons for homogenizing tempered glass include improving the performance and quality of the tempered glass, reducing the risk of self-explosion, improving the uniformity of the tempered glass, and achieving standardization and quality control‌.

--1. Improve tempered glass performance and quality

----1.1. Strength and heat resistance‌:

Homogenization treatment can stabilize the internal pressure and composition of the tempered glass, thereby improving the strength and heat resistance of the tempered glass, reducing problems such as thermal cracking and breakage, and making tempered glass processing and manufacturing more stable and reliable.

----1.2. Optical transparency and chemical stability:

Homogenization for tempered glass can also improve the optical transparency and chemical stability of tempered glass, making it more suitable for applications in various fields, such as optical devices, instrumentation, building materials, etc.

--2. Reduce the risk of self-explosion of tempered glass

Tempered glass is a type of prestressed glass in which compressive stress is usually formed on the surface in order to increase its strength. However, there may be impurities such as nickel sulfide inside tempered glass. These impurities will undergo crystal phase transformation under certain conditions, causing the tempered glass to self-explode. Through homogenization treatment, that is, heating the tempered glass to a certain temperature and keeping it warm for a period of time, impurities such as nickel sulfide can quickly complete the crystal phase transformation, allowing defective tempered glass that may self-explode to be broken in advance in the factory, thereby reducing the need for post-installation Risk of self-explosion during use

--3. Improve tempered glass uniformity

The uniformity of tempered glass is a key indicator of tempered glass quality. Tempered Glass with poor uniformity is prone to problems such as optical distortion and unstable mechanical properties. Through homogenization treatment, the uniformity of the tempered glass can be improved and tempered glass defects caused by uneven batch materials, difficulty in melting and homogenization, etc can be reduced.

--4. Achieve standardization and quality control

Homogenization for tempered glass is a crucial step in tempered glass processing and manufacturing. By following this specification and adopting scientific and reasonable processing and manufacturing techniques, we can ensure that the quality and performance of tempered glass products meet standard requirements. This helps achieve standardization and quality control of tempered glass production, improve tempered glass production efficiency and tempered glass product competitiveness‌

Do All Tempered Glass Products Have to Be Homogenized?

Not every type of tempered glass must be treated homogeneously, depending on customer needs and the environment in which the tempered glass is used.Homogenization treatment is suitable for areas with high safety requirements, such as automobiles, construction, home appliances, electronics and other industries. These industries need to impose strict requirements on the impact resistance and bending resistance of tempered glass to ensure the safety of use.

What kind of tempered glass needs to be homogenized?

-‌-1. Ordinary tempered glass‌:

During the production process of ordinary tempered glass, due to the presence of nickel sulfide particles inside, these particles may cause the tempered glass to self-explode when the temperature changes. Through homogenization treatment, these nickel sulfide particles can undergo phase change, thereby reducing the risk of self-explosion‌ of tempered glass.

‌--2. Silver-based offline Low-E tempered glass‌:

This kind of tempered glass is easy to explode during use, posing safety risks. Through homogenization, it can be exploded in advance during the heating process to avoid sudden explosion during use, thus greatly reducing safety risks of that silver-based offline Low-e tempered glass during use‌

What is Homogenizing Treatment of Tempered Glass

‌Advantages of tempered glass homogenization treatment‌:

--1. Reduce the risk of self-explosion‌:

Homogenization treatment can effectively reduce the risk of self-explosion of tempered glass. Through homogenization treatment, impurities such as nickel sulfide remaining in the tempered glass can be eliminated. These impurities are one of the main causes of self-explosion of tempered glass.

--2. Improved safety performance‌:

The homogenized tempered glass has better uniformity and transparency, and stronger impact resistance, thereby improving the overall safety performance

--3. Improved qualification rate‌:

During the homogenization process, tempered glass with uneven internal stress will be detonated in advance, avoiding "self-explosion" events that may occur after installation, and improving the qualification rate of tempered glass.

‌Disadvantages of tempered glass homogenization treatment‌:

-‌-1. Increased costs‌:

Homogenization requires additional equipment and time, increasing production costs. The use and maintenance costs of the homogenization furnace are high, resulting in an increase in the price of the final tempered glass product.

--2. Complex process‌:

The homogenization process of tempered glass requires precise control of temperature and air flow. The process is complex and requires high technical requirements for operators.

--3. Cause tempered glass embrittlement‌:

Homogenization treatment eliminates the internal stress of the tempered glass through instantaneous heating and cooling. If not handled properly, the internal stress of the tempered glass may not be completely eliminated. Instead, the tempered glass may become brittle and prone to cracks or fragments.

-‌-4. May affect the physical properties of the tempered glass‌:

During the homogenization process, high-temperature heating and rapid cooling may have a certain impact on the physical properties of the tempered glass, such as reducing its heat resistance and cold resistance‌
