Steels containing more than approximately 10% Cr are defined as stainless materials. Depending on the amount of Cr and other alloying elements such as Ni and Mo, properties like mechanical strength and corrosion resistance are defined.

Höganäs' standard PM grades are all low-carbon versions and optimised for compaction and sintering/heat treatment. The grades can be categorised in three groups: austenitic, ferritic and ferritic/martensitic.

Compressibility differs between the austenitic and ferritic grades, but the biggest difference is workability for a fully dense material. Most shapes can be made with both powder types so only corrosion resistance needs to be taken under consideration.
