When it comes to construction, cement is the word that comes first to our mind. This is because, it is an important ingredient used in construction. Out of all the ingredients that are used in the construction process, the focus on cement always remains more because it gives strength and durability to structures.
Although there are different types of cement available in the market such as OPC, PPC, White Cement, Rapid Hardening Cement, PSC, Quick Setting Cement, PPC is mainly used because it possesses all the qualities of being good cement-like High fineness, more workability, high strength and increased resistance to cracks and more.
Let us discuss PPC
Portland pozzolana cement or PPC is the commonly used cement. PPC is an advanced variant of cement that is produced by inter-grinding clinker with gypsum and pozzolana.
Another method of producing PPC is grinding clinker separately and blending with pozzolana in a fixed proportion which happens in the blending units. This process may yield a low-quality product as compared to inter grinding process.
In PPC, the differentiating element is Pozzolana whose reaction with calcium hydroxide at normal temperature, leads to secondary hydration reaction and gives enhanced cementitious property.
Manufacturing of PPC
The manufacturing process of PPC is divided into four processes: Obtaining limestone as raw material, crushing of Limestone, clinker production and finally clinker grinding into the cement with pozzolanic material and gypsum
Obtaining Lime Stone as Raw material:
Limestone is extracted from mines using blasting techniques. This limestone may be in the form of boulders. This is then transported to the primary crusher for converting into a suitable size required for further process in the plant.
Raw Material Crushing:
After mining limestone and properly adjusting the right dose of Calcareous and Argillaceous materials, these raw materials are sent into primary crushers for the reduction to the right size. In the next stage, the raw materials are piled in the yard with the help of a stacker and reclaimed through the reclaimer which leads to pre-homogenization of raw materials for further processing.
Clinker Production:
This raw material is sent into a rotary kiln for calcination and chemical reactions under high temperatures. After the calcination process, several chemical reactions occur and these raw materials are now converted into clinkers which then passed through a cooler to bring at a particular specified temperature.
Clinker Grinding
Post cooling, these clinkers are stocked in a silo and then sent to the cement mill for final grinding along with pozzolanic material and gypsum in a pre-set proportion. The fine grey coloured powder called cement is thus obtained, bagged and dispatched to the market.
Features of Portland Pozzolana Cement
It is having low heat of hydration which in turn provides greater resistance to crack developments in concrete. It is environment friendly, offers more durability & has a high resistance to acid and chemical attacks.
