Hello All,
I am at the point of adding the finish to my

40k

army and I am really torn on whether to do the dullcote matte finish or to do a Satin. Any thoughts on how a Satin finish looks on the minis?

Matte - The most realistic. Worst for protection.
Gloss - SHINY! Best for protection.
Satin - Nice sheen. In between for protection.
Other options:

Gloss first for the gloss's qualities of protection.
Matte last to dull the gloss down.

The differences between matte and gloss are more noticable than that of between matte and satin.

If you want an all-round winner, go for satin. Careful, though, because satin sometimes shares the same "clouding" effect as a matte varnish. Yeah, I can go on forever!

Just me 2 pennies worth.

Thank you for the input. Any satin spray finishes you would recommend?

Hello Havok210,
It seems to me that

GW

clear coat is a satin coat leaning towards the Matte side, so I started using Testor's Semi-Gloss which is more readily available locally. Testor's leans towards the wet/shiny side, so I had to Testor's DullCote over it. I must say I'm very happy with the combined effect of the two sprays.

Hope it helps,
Frankie

Yar, I be no expert matey. I've had no problems with

GW

's Purity Seal - WHEN USED IN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS!!! Seriously though, it's good stuff, but don't go spraying in and extremes of weather. Examples:

- First time I tried it out. Sprayed some models in an open garage during stormy, (very) windy weather. The models got a good ol' treatment of frost.

- Once exposed a model that had been newly varnished into direct sunlight. It started to go cloudy! I immediately hid him away and sprayed him some more - problem soleved.

Top tip: Lots of thin layers work best. Don't put one great big horrible coat on your models, because it'll look like a gloss finish! Use nice sweeping motions, gradualy building the layers up, letting the coats dry a little inbetween each time.

There ye go!
