Nonwoven needle-punched geotextiles offer excellent water flow properties for drainage and other applications.

Needle-punched non woven geotextiles are made from polypropylene fibres that are tangled together in a needle-punching process. The fibers may be made in continuous or short lengths and achieve their strength by interlocking. Needle-punched non woven geotextiles have excellent water flow rates and are used for filtration of soil fines. Needle-punched non-woven geotextiles have been used in drainage applications including trench drains (also known as french drains), as a wrapping for perforated pipe, for erosion protection, for the separation of a roads sub-base and base course, and combined with three-dimensional structures to create prefabricated drains. They are also commonly used with geomembranes to provide a protective cushion. Needle-punched non woven primary functions: filtration; separation; protection; drainage.
Layfield provides sewing services for all types of geotextiles including non woven needle punched types. Please check with your representative for details on the sizes of non woven geotextile that can be sewn. Nonwovens are very bulky and handling limits are reached quickly.

Although non woven geotextiles are made from a chemically resistant polypropylene material they are made from very small fibers. These small fibers have a large surface area that is adversely affected by many chemicals. In most soil applications the concentrations of any chemicals are not sufficient to cause harm to the geotextile. Where highly concentrated chemicals are encountered the geotextile will not be as resistant as might be indicated from a polypropylene chemical chart. For all chemical contact applications, a test should be performed before using a non woven geotextile.
